Frieren
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (ja: 葬送のフリーレン, Sōsō no Furīren; a.k.a. "Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead"[1] is a Japanese manga series written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. It has been serialized in Shogakukan's Shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 2020-04, with its chapters collected in twelve tankōbon volumes as of 2023-12. The series is licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media. An anime television series adaptation produced by Madhouse premiered in 2023-09.
Taking place in a fantasy world, the story follows an elven mage Frieren as she embarks on a ten-year journey to reach the resting place of souls in order to reunite with her former comrade Himmel, who once slayed the Demon King.

S1 E1: The Journey's End

The Hero's party (Himmel, Frieren, Eisen, Heiter) is introduced during their homecoming after defeating the Demon King. During the night of the celebration, a meteor shower occurs. Frieren says she knows of a better place to watch the meteor shower. She proposes they see it together when the shower occurs again in 50 years. Frieren goes on a journey in the meantime. Frieren returns to the city where Himmel lives where they also meet up with Eisen and Heiter. They travel for several days to the place Frieren recommends. They see the meteor shower. Himmel dies of old age shortly after seeing the meteor shower.
Twenty years later, Frieren meets up with Heiter. Frieren finds Heiter has adopted a child named Fern. Heiter asks Frieren to research life extending magic for him.

S1 E6: The Hero of the Village

Stark fights and defeats the dragon threatening the village he has been living in for three years.
Frieren, Fern, and Stark are stopped at a border checkpoint in a village. They are not permitted to pass by the border guards. Frieren does not argue and prepares for a long stay to study magic.
Stark has a sweet desert at a place he remembers visiting with his master Eisen. Fern recruits Stark to find a way to legitimately pass through the closed border. They are unsuccessful.
They find Frieren hiding from town guards who are searching for her. Eventually, a town guard finds them and apologizes for not recognizing Frieren, one of the Hero's Party. the local town leader asks Frieren to pass through the border to help fight demons in the land north of the border.
S1 E7: Like a Fairy Tale

Frieren, Fern, and Stark help a traveling merchant by clearing a road blocked by a landslide. They visit a town celebrating the Hero's party that defeated the Demon Lord 80 years ago.
Frieren, Fern, and Stark travel to a town in Graf Granat's domain. Frieren prepares to fire upon demons she sees in the streets but is detained by city guards to protect the demon peace envoy. Frieren is jailed. Fern and Stark visit Frieren and share that they learned that the town had been fighting the forces of the demon Aura the Guillotine until Aura sent a peace envoy to ask negotiate a cease fire. Frieren comments that demons are predators of humans who use the ability to speak human languages to eat humans rather than to live peacefully with them. Frieren recalls an incident in which Himmel prevented her from killing a young demon who a small village chief saved; the young demon killed the village chief, convincing Himmel to kill the young demon.
The three demon diplomats, Lügner, Linie, and Dracht, are confronted by the town leader, Graf Granat, who threatens to kill them as revenge for the leader's son whom Aura killed. Lügner convicnes the leader that he also mourned the loss of his father in the war and wished for peace. The town leader relents and decides to give peace a chance. Linie later asks Lügner what a “father” is to which Lügner confesses he has no idea.
Dracht enters the town jail, kills a guard with his wire magic, and confronts Fern. Dracht tells Fern he must kill her.
S1 E8: Frieren the Slayer

Frieren kills Dracht but, upon discovering the dead jail guard, goes into hiding.
Fern and Stark eat a meal. They decide the demons must be defeated. Stark confesses he believes Lügner to be very powerful since the demon only seemed wary of Frieren.
Fern and Stark happen to encounter Frieren. Stark begs Frieren to defeat the demons. Frieren asks them to defeat the demons, saying she believes Fern and Stark are strong enough. Alone, Frieren later identifies a large magic source 10 km outside of town to be Aura who threatens the town.
Graf Granat confronts the demons again after discovering the dead guard. Graf notes one of the demons is also missing. Graf deduces the demons attacked the imprisoned mage who was powerful enough to defend herself. The demon Lügner manipulates his own blood to form prehensile tentacles to kill Graf's personal bodyguards and take him hostage.
Fern and Stark infiltrate Graf Granat's castle.
Lügner and Linie torture Graf Granat for the knowledge of how to disable the magic barrier protecting the town. Graf Granat does not divulge the secret. The demons leave him alone to search the castle for written records that may describe how to control the barrier.
Stark attempts to free Graf Granat. The demons return. Lügner offers to permit Stark to run away. Stark is offended that Lügner will not even look at him and so attacks Lügner who is surprised at Stark's speed. Lügner pins Stark with a blood claw. Fern achieves a sneak attack on Lügner, nearly killing him with Zoltraak. Stark and Fern flee with the injured Graf Granat.
S1 E9: Aura the Guillotine

Fern confronts Aura. Fern demonstrates an ability to dispel Aura's magic over the warrior corpses.
Stark and Fern lay low in a church while a priest heals Graf Granat.
Stark and Fern decide to help evacuate the town (Fern) and ask Frieren for help (Stark). Before they can put the plan into action, Stark notices blood on Fern's cloak. Fern suddenly deduces that blood on her clothes as well as those of Stark is the blood of Lügner and is emitting mana, indicating some offensive magic is active against them. Immediately, Fern is pierced and pinned by a blood tentacle fired by Lügner while Linie begins attacking Stark.
Lügner monologues at Fern. Eventually, Fern retrieves her staff by an opening Lügner offered her and they begin fighting.
Stark and Linie fight. Stark learns that Linie is mimicking the fighting style of his master, Eisen. Eventually, Stark realizes that, although Linie is capable of mimicking his master's fighting style, she lacks his master's strength. Stark attacks Linie with a finishing blow with a long wind-up time during which Linie is free to attack with all her strength; Stark endures the hit and follows through with a Lightning Strike that instantly kills Linie. Lügner becomes distracted by Linieʼs death which permits Fern to instantly kill him as well with Zoltraak.

Frieren And company stop by an old dwarf named Voll who protects a village. Voll confides in Frieren that he has forgotten his wife's appearance yet still keeps his promise to protect her village even though no one remembers her or his promise.
Frieren and company do chores for people to find Sein's childhood friend, Gorilla Warrior.
S1 E17: Take Care

Sein parts ways with Frieren, Fern, and Stark in order to travel to meet up with his childhood friend, Gorilla Warrior.
Fern falls ill with a fever. Frieren and Stark find a lone villager where they leave Fern while they go searching for a special tree with mushrooms that can cure Fern. They cure Fern and continue on their journey. Some discussion is had between Frieren and Stark regarding insisting on helping others even if it causes embarrassment.
S1 E18: First-Class Mage Exam

Frieren and Fern apply to take the First-class Mage exam.
Frieren is teamed up with two third-class mages named Kanne and Lawine who appear to dislike teamwork but who are actually very close and work well together.
Fern is teamed up with the green-haired mage from earlier named Übel.
S1 E19: Well-Laid Plans
Frieren and her party of Kanne and Lawine make a plan to catch a Stille by contaminating as many bodies of water as they can with mana in order to drive Stille towards uncontaminated bodies of water of their choosing. Frieren uses a short-range bird-capturing spell to capture their Stille by simply waiting by a body of water and suppressing her mana. Fern's party fights with rival parties aiming to purloin their Stille instead of capturing one.
S1 E20: Necessary Killing

Frieren breaks the barrier. Kanne and Lawine defeat Richter. Frieren defeats Denken. Various groups pass the first test, including Frieren's group (Frieren, Lawine, Kanne), Denken's group (Deken, Laufen, Richter), Wirbel's group, and Fern's group (Fern, Übel, Land)
S1 E22: Future Enemies
Fern catches Stark sleeping in and learns he has been drinking juice after dark. Frierrn treats Fern and Stark to a fancy restaurant she remembers visiting with Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen. Denken treats Laufen and Richter to the same restaurant. Übel threatens Land with Wirbel's restraining magic, revealing she can instinctively copy other mage's magic if she can learn to empathize with them. Übel and Land eat at the same restaurant as Frieren and Denken. Stark is recruited against his will with Fern's blessing by Wirbel and an associate to dispatch a monster. All the first class mage examinees receive invitations via messenger bird to the second test.
S1 E23: Conquering the Labyrinth

Denken and company retreat from the Frieren replica.
Übel and Land defeat Übel's clone. Übel tricks Land into revealing he was a clone by putting her own life at risk (by giving the injured Land her escape golem) in such a way that Land would have been responsible for her death.
Frieren, Fern, and Sense discover the tomb of an ancient king from a “Unified Dynasty Age”. They meet up with Denken and the others waiting outside the final room door.
Three other mages pinned down by the Sense replica retreat. Their leader suffers a grave impalement wound and retreats via escape golem.
