A piping and instrumentation diagram (a.k.a. P&ID) is a type of technical drawing used to communicate mass and information flows in a chemical plant, pipeline, or other similar industrial processes. In contrast to a PFD (process flow diagram), a P&ID contains more detail and may serve as the canonical reference document for recording equipment identification numbers. A P&ID is generally intended to be used by engineers and technicians for use in daily monitoring and troubleshooting.

- 2011: I learned to navigate P&IDs during my CHEMENG 180: Plant Design undergraduate course at Stanford University. Specifically, I learned under Tony Pavone about uranium leaching and yellowcake production at the White Mesa Mill near Blanding, Utah.
- 2011/2018: I got hands-on experience with P&IDs while working as a petroleum engineer for Resolute Energy at the Aneth Central Gas Processing Plant (ACGPP), a carbon dioxide reinjection plant near Aneth, Utah that formed part of a tertiary recovery of crude oil from the Aneth Oil Field.
