Prisoner's dilemma

From Reboil

In game theory, the prisoner's dilemma is a situation in which two competitors must choose whether to risk being a sucker by coöperating for mutual advantage or to selfishly defect for a potentially high reward if the other chooses coöperation and gets nothing. The dilemma is difficult to escape without direct communication among participants to facilitate coöperation.

The concept is similar to the tragedy of the commons.
