- Alliance, The
- (B1): An amalgamation of human civilizations that banded together to fight the Syndicate.
- Bear-cows, The
- (B8; a.k.a. "The Kicks"): Sentient beings located beyond Enigma space. They consist of individuals each with carbon-based oxygen-respiring bodies that resemble teddy bears with cow muzzles.
- Callas Republic, The
- (B7-): An Alliance ally. Victoria Rione was Co-President of them for a time.
- Enigma
- (B7-; a.k.a. "The aliens"; B8) As as-yet unnamed group of sentients whose ships have fought both Syndicate and Alliance ships. Purposefully collapsed a HyperNet gate in previous books, killing one or more Syndicate worlds.
- Rift Federation, The
- (B7-): An Alliance ally.
- Spider-wolves
- (B8; a.k.a. "BUBs", "Big Ugly Bastards", "The Dancers") Aliens found by JG beyond Enigma space who are communicative and possess advanced technology and a peaceful demeanor. Most human characters are extremely repulsed by their physical appearance. (Baltakatei: They also conveniently have individual bodies approximately 1-meter in size like the Enigma and Bear-cows).

- (B7,ch2): A captain who is independent-minded and loyal to Blackjack and distrustful of the Alliance government. Captain of Illustrious. (B8,ch1): Head of 6th Battlecruiser division over Vent.

- (B7,Ch8): Husband of Victoria Rione. POW of Denai freed by JG.
- Desjani, Captain Tanya
- (B1): Jack Geary's wife who used to be a captain under his command but managed to marry him when they were both the same rank (Baltakatei: Fulfilling the obligatory MC romantic interest requirement).

- (B7,Ch4?, 7): A ship captain JG confides his Kosatka honeymoon tale to (Ch7).
- Geary, Jane
- (B7-); (B7,ch2): Grand niece of JG. Captain of Dreadnaught.
- Geary, John "Blackjack"
- (B1; Meta: a.k.a. JG) The MC. An officer from an early time period of the war who woke up decades after to find competent military officers now rare and a less rigorous set of standards prevailing across the remainder of the military.
- Jameson, Lieutenant
- (B7,Ch6; a.k.a. “Shamrock”): An officer working for an engineering officer named Smaith. Skilled at losslessly obfuscating reports to Fleet Headquarters in order to grant field officers more freedom in exercising their authority. Is from Ire, one of the original colonies seeded by Earth; Jameson's hair color is green due to genetic manipulation of Ire's early colonists.

- (B7,ch2): Former enemy of JG. Faced court-martial charges.

- (B7,ch2): Captain of JG ship Incredible.

- (B7-, Ch6) Former Co-President of the Kalos Republic. Assigned by the Grand Council to influence JG to act to the benefit of the Grand Council.
- Sakai, Senator
- (B7-); (B7,ch2): Accompanied JG on the last campaign against the Syndics. (B7, Ch2): Member of the Grand Council. Met with JG with Navarro and _ to assign him to make peaceful contact with the Enigma aliens.
- Sharbon, General
- (B7): A Grand Council representative who boarded Dauntless with Victoria Rione. On unknown orders. (B8,ch1): A retired general.
- Smaith, Captain (?)
- (B7,Ch6?): Superior of Shamrock. Senior Fleets Engineer and commanding officer of Tanuki who evades Fleet Headquarters supervision in order to perform duties. (B8,ch1)

- (B7-; B7,ch2): Member of the Grand Council. Met wjth JG alongaude senators Navarro and Sakai to assign JG to make peace with the Enigma aliens. Distrustful of the military.
