Android is a smartphone and tablet operating system developed and maintained by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of the Google search engine. It is written in a language resembling Java, a similarity that was the subject of the 2012 lawsuit Google LLC v. Oracle America, Inc. that made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court in which the court decided in Google's favor.

History
- 2012: Oracle Corporation sued Google (later known as Alphabet Inc.) for copyright infringement because Android made use of the Java API without paying for a license.
- 2022-04-05: The U.S. Supreme Court decided the Google LLC v. Oracle America, Inc. case in favor of Google.
- 2025-11-13: Google backwalked their decision to completely disable sideloading of apps, permitting a method full of warnings to allow users to continue installing apps outside the Play Store.[1]
