- (15:20+00): I published a comment on a New York Times article comparing how Google defends its monopoly with how Microsoft did decades ago.[7]
In order to determine whether Google should be broken up, one need only look at the history of mergers and acquisitions it has made. Some highlights:
- 2003: Applied Semantics, to cripple search rival Overture.[8]
- 2006: YouTube, because Google Video couldn't compete.
- 2007: DoubleClick, to reduce competition with AdSense.
- 2007: Postini, to reduce competition with Gmail.
- 2010: reMail, to reduce competition with Gmail.
- 2013: Waze, to reduce competition with Google Maps.
- 2012: Sparrow, to reduce competition with Gmail.
- 2021: Fitbit, to eliminate competition with Android Wear.
Since most of Google's services are ad-supported (i.e. no costs), current anti-trust laws based on the “consumer welfare” standard fail to prevent anti-competitive mergers as the original “harmful dominance” standard would have (i.e. monopolies are bad). The result is Google's dominance over many markets and ability to force all sellers to pay higher advertising fees. These gains can then be used to acquire more ad-supported markets and intel, ad infinitum, cementing Googleʼs control. Sellers in markets Google dominates are then are forced to pass their increased ad costs to the consumer, raising prices. Thus, the consumer welfare theory puts both sellers and consumers at Googleʼs mercy. Therefore, Google should be broken up not because consumers are harmed, but because monopolies are bad.
