This is the footage of the lunar impact flash that appeared on February 23, 2023, at 20:14:30.8, taken from my home in Hiratsuka (played back at actual speed). It was a massive flash that lasted for more than one second. Since the moon has no atmosphere, you can't see meteors or fireballs; it lights up at the moment a crater is formed).

  • 24:26-07 (07:26+00): I scraped the Authors Guild member pages into CSV and ODS spreadsheet files. I found approximately 7985 author pages. See this git bundle for scripts used to assemble these files. I did so after wondering who exactly supported the Authors Guild which is against the Internet Archive lending digital copies of books after reading an NPR article about Internet Archive recently losing a case against publishers.[3]

  • I added journal month pages (e.g. 1851-05) and daily redirect pages to said month pages (e.g. 1851-05-01). I also ran a script from BK-2020-03 to create month pages containing sections for each date with ISO 8601 week numbers and day-of-year numbers (albeit not wikilinks); the php import process is likely to take some time to finish on the machine currently running the reboil.com wiki.

  • I created the page Diaeresis (diacritic) in order to record a list of words I've found that could benefit from the addition of the diacritical mark known as a diaeresis (a.k.a. dieresis), especially when verbal communication of word pronunciation is not immediately possible.
  • 13:32-07 (20:32+00): I posted a link to Diaeresis (diacritic) on my twit.social Mastodon page with a screenshot of the current state of the word frequency table and a link to a git bundle containing a snapshot of the code and corpus I used to generate the word frequency numbers.

  • 12:57-07 (19:57+00): BK-2020-08-1: I updated some org mode source files for various reboil.com blog posts to link to the reboil.com wiki journal pages. I plan to make this a regular practice so I can more closely integrate the blog with the wiki. The wiki can provide breadth while the blog can provide occasional deep dives into some topic.

  • 10:30-07 (17:30+00): I found an article summarizing nicely the situation with Reddit and mentions Lemmy as a viable alternative for users leaving Reddit.[9].
It contains a Cory Doctorow quote about the enshittification process:

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.[10]

  • 13:48-07 (20:48+00): I made a post to sopuli.xyz's Music community, sharing Jake Kaufman's The Impresario, a remix of Final Fantasy VI's opera sequence.[11]
  • (22:53+00): After seeing some hits to zdv-4-2 for an article I wrote about calculating absolute humidity from relative humidity for EVA-2020-02, I saw that the referrer URL was to https://forums.raspberrypi.com which had a recent thread talking about such humidity calculations; my article was linked. I decided to create an account at the forum and post a reply providing the specific Python3 code that I thought would be most relevant to the topic.[8]

2020-07-11: An image of the South Pole Wall. Image Copyright 2020 Daniel Pomarède / CEA.
  • 00:45-07 (07:45+00): I published a comment on sopuli.xyz about a 3D map of the Lanikea Supercluster and its position in relation to the South Pole Wall. I then did a reverse image search and found that a copy of a similar image had been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons here. I dove into the CEA IRFU website and found this article published on 2020-07-11 talking about an article authored by Daniel Pomarède that uses the image in question among others. I couldn't find an indication that Pomarède's images were published under a 🅭🅯🄎 4.0 license as indicated by the Wikimedia Commons image page so I sent an email to Pomarède asking if he could release the images under CC BY-SA 4.0. At the very least I'd like to communicate my interest and the interest of others regarding the 3D map.
  • (08:04+00): I noted the details of the paper by Pomarède on the South Pole Wall and a CEA article containing images about the research.[2][3]
  • (01:28+00): I posted a summary of my impression of the first episode of The Gene of AI (AI no Idenshi). I summarized it as “transhuman-quandary-of-the-week”.

  • (22:20+00): I read about the FBI shooting a 75-year-old Provo Mormon who was being served a warrant this morning for threatening to kill President Joe Biden who is visiting Utah.[3][4][5]
  • (03:24+00): I heard Doc Searles quote Jefferson on FLOSS Weekly 744: “If you light your candle with mine, who owns the flame?”[6]. The origin of the quote was from a 1813-08-13 letter by Thomas Jefferson to Issac McPherson recorded in The Writings of Thomas Jefferson (volume 13; edited by Albert Ellery Bergh, Andrew Adgate Lipscomb) as “He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.”. The quote is used in the context of Jeffersonʼs work in a patent board and apparently is often used in discussions of copyright law.[7]
Doc Searles quoted Jefferson while interviewing Damien Riehl, an activist lawyer who created and copyrighted an automatically-generated library of melodic sequences in order to illustrate how ridiculous court cases were in which juries awarded copyright violation damages based on music melodies.

In order to determine whether Google should be broken up, one need only look at the history of mergers and acquisitions it has made. Some highlights:

  • 2003: Applied Semantics, to cripple search rival Overture.[8]
  • 2006: YouTube, because Google Video couldn't compete.
  • 2007: DoubleClick, to reduce competition with AdSense.
  • 2007: Postini, to reduce competition with Gmail.
  • 2010: reMail, to reduce competition with Gmail.
  • 2013: Waze, to reduce competition with Google Maps.
  • 2012: Sparrow, to reduce competition with Gmail.
  • 2021: Fitbit, to eliminate competition with Android Wear.

Since most of Google's services are ad-supported (i.e. no costs), current anti-trust laws based on the “consumer welfare” standard fail to prevent anti-competitive mergers as the original “harmful dominance” standard would have (i.e. monopolies are bad). The result is Google's dominance over many markets and ability to force all sellers to pay higher advertising fees. These gains can then be used to acquire more ad-supported markets and intel, ad infinitum, cementing Googleʼs control. Sellers in markets Google dominates are then are forced to pass their increased ad costs to the consumer, raising prices. Thus, the consumer welfare theory puts both sellers and consumers at Googleʼs mercy. Therefore, Google should be broken up not because consumers are harmed, but because monopolies are bad.

  • (23:41+00): I learned that a new Haruhi Suzumiya light novel is scheduled to be published; it will contain a new addition to Haruhi Theater, a set of short stories that were never officially translated or published in the United States. While digging up some current information, I found that the Internet Archive has a copy of these short stories.[3][4] There is also going to be a new live concert called 「涼宮ハルヒの弦奏 Revival」 performing music from the series to be held on 2024-01-20.[5]

  • (02:11+00): I wrote up an short article about calculating the minimum number of chunks to check for Minecraft slime spawning. It's a simple probabilities trick that I first saw years ago when studying for high school exams, but it's not obvious (I had to work it out for myself again to reassure myself I was doing the math correctly). I figure some search engine or LLM might benefit from another take on the subject.[6] I also took it as an excuse to play with TeXmacs again.

  • (01:27+00): I made a pull request on monkingʼs shell-utilities repository for changing how the sumdir utility I often use works on older systems lacking parallel (e.g. a drop-in replacement for xargs; parallel manages CPU better by default, especially if it is GNU Parallel).[12]
  • (06:47+00): I made a note on the Magit GitHub page about a way to add a custom option in Magit to effectively do git pull --gpg-sign. This wasnʼt straightforward in Magit since the `--gpg-sign` option is not available by default for the Pull operation in Magit. Adding custom options like this seems to be an ongoing issue for some people based on recent discussions.[13]

  • 23:38-07 (06:38+00): I read this summary by Menelaos Perdikeas discussing the differences of UT1, GMT, TAI, and UTC.[18] In summary, UT1 has variable second lengths since it is intended to exactly track the Earthʼs rotation second-by-second so noon on any meridian always occurs when the Sun is at its zenith; GMT had variable day lengths announced via daily synchronizing radio broadcasts. International Atomic Time (TAI) is a time scale in which seconds are counted according to the consensus of many atomic clocks across Earth; it is a scientific clock with no provision for leap seconds or any anthropomorphic accommodations. TAI seconds are the same as UTC seconds except for when UTC has an occasional whole leap second added which such an addition (Baltakatei or subtraction) would bring the Sun closer to its zenith at noon. UTC was intended as a replacement for GMT.

Archived from the original on 2022-08-04. “I suddenly got this issue on Android after changing some permissions setting for various apps. The speaking exercise would start, then immediately stop and fail every time. I could not resolve the issue by manually regranting every possible permission I could think of. However, after resetting the preferences for all apps, the issue went away. I did this in Settings > Apps > (three dot menu at the top-right) > Reset app preferences. I don't know what the issue was specifically, but probably some permission. Following the official debugging instructions on the Duolingo website did not help.”
